Secretary of State called for immediate release of unjustly detained
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement in support of the people of Belarus.
“The United States is inspired by the way the Belarusian people peacefully demonstrate their desire to determine their future. We adhere to our long-term commitment to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Belarus, as well as the desire of the Belarusian people to choose their leaders and their own path, free from external interference, ”said Pompeo.
“We remain deeply concerned about the serious shortcomings of the August 9 presidential elections in Belarus and strongly condemn the violence against peaceful demonstrators and journalists, the arrests of opposition candidates and peaceful demonstrators, the blocking of the Internet and the ill-treatment of detainees,” the head of the State Department continued. “We call for the immediate release of those unjustly detained and the provision of information on those who are reported missing.”.
“The United States supports free and fair elections that reflect the will of the Belarusian people. The August 9 elections fell short of this standard. Belarus, like the United States, is a member of the OSCE, which adheres to these standards. We call on the government of Belarus to accept the OSCE’s offer to act as a mediator in organizing a dialogue and involving all stakeholders in it. We support international efforts to independently investigate election-related violations of human rights in Belarus, as well as post-election repression, ”said the US Secretary of State.
“We call on the government of Belarus to actively interact with the Belarusian society, including through the recently created National Coordination Council, reflecting the demands of the Belarusian people, for the sake of the future of Belarus and a successful Belarus,” summed up Mike Pompeo.
Let us remind you that Belarus has faced an acute political crisis since the time when tens of thousands of demonstrators rejected the victory of President Alexander Lukashenko in the August 9 elections, the results of which, according to Lukashenko’s opponents, were falsified..
