All the world’s media write about an unusual Israeli digital project
Go to Instagram account @ eva.stories and watch stories. This is one of the first in history «Instagram» full-length films shot in the story format: vertically and in the first person, with stickers, hashtags and audience questions. For the last 24 hours, it has been updated every few minutes. This is a real movie, told from the perspective of a 13-year-old Jewish girl, Eva Heyman, who lived in a small town in Hungary during World War II. Eva has just received her first high-heeled shoes, she dreams of becoming a journalist and has a video blog. It’s like a real teenager’s account, only living not now, but in 1944. This instagram stopped when sirens in Israel howled in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. And the stories ended because blog author Eva rode the car to Auschwitz. The story is based on real events and is based on one of the hundreds of surviving diaries of teenagers killed during the Holocaust. This is an Anne Frank who has just migrated to the video format and speaks to us in the language of modern children. And unlike Anna, she is not in a shelter, but in a ghetto. Authors of the project – Israeli millionaire Mati Kochavi and his daughter video maker Maya.
Before our eyes, the bourgeois life of Eastern Europe turns into a nightmare: first, the business is taken away from the grandfather, then yellow stars are sewn onto his clothes, then the houses of neighbors are ruined, and now yesterday’s friends are not allowed on the doorstep, and the final – ghetto, carriage and camp from where Eva will never return.
The real girl Eva died in Auschwitz among one and a half million children killed in cells. Her mother, who later committed suicide, survived in the camp, returned to her hometown and found the diary from which this movie was filmed. The project is criticized for devaluing memory and flirting with the culture of selfies, but, for example, the Yad Vashem Museum, which was not involved in its creation, supported the initiative. His staff agreed that social media – it’s just a modern way of communicating information to teenagers.
