Al Pacino. Return of the gangster

Al Pacino: &# 171; I always want to diversify the drama with comedy, because life is a tragicomedy&# 187;

LOS ANGELES –
Fisher Stevens’ crime comedy Stand Up Guys with Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin has been released in Russia. Hero of Al Pacino – 70-year-old gangster Val – is released from prison, in which he spent almost half his life, and is trying to restore trampled justice.

Question: You have played the roles of gangsters many times. Did this experience influence the image of Val?

Al Pacino: I have played in many films, but for some reason the films about the mafia turned out to be the most popular. As a result, I have a certain role. Because of this, I will think a hundred times before agreeing to such a role..

But the role of Val is significant for me, perhaps because it is a story of testing friendship for strength. This is an exotic, humorous role. The entire Real Boys movie is exotic compared to conventional gangster movies.

My choice was also influenced by the opportunity to work with Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin. Yes, I’ve done quite a few mafia films – Donnie Brasco, The Godfather, Scarface, Carlito’s Way – and I’ve always tried to diversify my characters so as not to repeat myself. But sometimes I really want to show something familiar that the audience wants to see..

Question: What are your favorite films??

A.P .: There was the film “The Right People,” or “Finding Richard,” and “Salome Wilde,” which I also directed. They came out when I was much younger, but I still feel a sense of belonging to them..

Question: It seems like the older you get, the more you feel like doing comedy.?

A.P .: No, I do not think so. I started out as a comedian and am glad I didn’t stay in comedy. But I always want to diversify the drama with comedy, because life is a tragicomedy..

Question: You dance tango in this movie, you danced tango in Scent of a Woman. Outside the set, you dance too?

A.P .: To be honest, I started learning tango twenty years ago because I needed to play Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman. But I completely forgot everything since then, so I had to start all over again..

Recently someone asked me, “Do you have a gun?” I replied that I had a pistol in the film, but I do not own any weapon. I have never in my life had my own pistol or rifle – I am not interested in weapons. Every time I have to act in a film, I worry, well, how will I shoot, if I even forgot how to pull the trigger.

It’s the same with tango – I forget the dance moves right after filming. I guess I have a bad memory.

Question: How did you manage to keep your passion for acting for half a century??

A.P .: I don’t need to prove anything to anyone anymore. But if something interests me, and I get enthusiasm, then I am very happy about it. I’m also lucky to have Real Boys filmed in Los Angeles, which means I didn’t have to part with my kids while filming..

Question: So much vital energy emanates from you …

A.P .: I had one friend, whose name I will not name – he was a very famous director in the 80s. His eyes glittered, he literally radiated energy. I kept thinking, how does he manage to look so young? – It turned out that he simply did not notice his age and remained the way he is.

People experience their age differently, which is why there is a difference between those who are old and those who act as if they are old. It turns out that age is a relative concept..

Question: How old do you feel?

A.P .: I have no age. (Laughs).

Question: How do you do it?

A.P .: I have no idea. But I appreciate that this is given to me, and I am grateful for it. True, sometimes I look at myself in the mirror and think: “Who is this guy – I don’t know him?”.

Question: What do you love to do most in your spare time?

A.P .: I love to read and I read a lot. Now I am reading a very interesting autobiography of actor Edward Robinson.

Question: Why haven’t you written your own memoirs yet??

A.P .: It’s a great idea, but I haven’t had the opportunity yet. After all, you have to sit down with someone for this work. But I do seminars from time to time, during which I communicate with both the actors and my fans. And at these seminars I check whether people like certain stories. So I hope this will help me write my autobiography in the future..
